High intensity interval training is becoming a common term lately. There is very good reason for this, high intensity interval training (HIIT) is one of the most effective ways to lose body fat and raise your level of fitness. This type of training is not for everyone so check with your doctor first and get his/her approval.

One of the most common HIIT sessions would be a 1:2 work rest ratio. That would be 1 minute of high intensity work and 2 minutes of active recovery. Individuals with a high fitness level have been known to reverse the ratio to 2 minutes of work with 1 minute active recovery. With this type of training, you will find out quick how much recovery time you require.

Just for clarification, high intensity would be about a 7 or above on a 1-10 scale or 80% max HR and above. Active recovery is about a 4-5 on the 1-10 scale. The worst thing you can do is completely stop during your recovery time. The reason we keep moving during recovery is to “flush” our bodies of all the acid buildup we created during the work time.

Because of the intensity levels used, it is recommended only doing a HIIT workout 1-2 times a week. So the question is; “with all the benefit of HIIT training, is there any way I can do it more than 2 times a week?”

The answer is yes. At Oakland County Kettlebell Club we use the principles of HIIT and apply them to kettlebell training in a way that is safe to do 3-4 times a week. This is just another way kettlebell training is changing the way people look and feel all across the world.

A kettlebell is a traditional Russian training tool that has been used since the turn of the century to develop full body conditioning and fitness. A kettlebell looks like a cannon ball with a handle. The shape of the kettlebell allows for unique positioning of the weight directly above your center of mass (unlike a dumbbell or barbell which must be held in front of the body) and allows you to keep your hand and wrists in neutral alignment. Which enables greater endurance and longevity in the core lifts so that you can produce a much higher volume of exercise and thus greater conditioning and fitness.

Of course you gain some strength since the ketlebell is a weight, but the true advantages come with the power endurance that kettlebell training provides. Kettlebell training alone will not build substantial size or absolute strength, but if strength is what you are looking for, we have a program for you.

There is a point in our work capacity (conditioning) that our body no longer has enough oxygen to support the level of intensity we are working at. This is called our anaerobic threshold. By training very close to this point, not only do we improve our conditioning but also how effectively our muscles utilize the oxygen. This is one of the most effective tools for conditioning, eventually, you will advance to 10 minute sets!
